Collection: Elizabeth Hartman
Elizabeth Hartman is a renowned quilter, author, and fabric designer based in Portland, Oregon, celebrated for her vibrant, color-rich modern designs. After making her first quilt in 1999, she became instantly hooked on the medium, finding in quilt-making the perfect harmony of artistic expression and satisfying technical challenge, all resulting in a beautiful, utilitarian object.
Before committing to quilting full-time at the end of 2009, Elizabeth navigated an eclectic career path. She manufactured patches for high school sports uniforms, worked for the Portland Opera, and spent nearly a decade as a commercial mortgage closer. It was during this final corporate role that she discovered the thriving online quilting community and began blogging about her own projects.
As a self-taught maker, Elizabeth learned through trial and error, a journey that inspired her debut book, The Practical Guide to Patchwork (2010). Written as the comprehensive manual she wished she had possessed as a beginner, it won the 2011 Next Generation Indie Book Award. A proud personal milestone occurred when her childhood local library branch acquired copies. She has since written Modern Patchwork and Patchwork City, filmed Craftsy video classes, and frequently appeared in premier industry publications.
A foundational figure in the modern quilting movement, Elizabeth co-founded the Portland Modern Quilt Guild and served on the national Modern Quilt Guild board. Today, she designs hit fabric collections for Robert Kaufman and sells popular wholesale patterns, finding her ultimate fulfillment in empowering others to create their own art.
